Although legend tells us that Betsy Ross designed the flag, it was probably created by Francis Hopkinson, the designer of the seal of the United States. The American flag's thirteen stripes represent the Thirteen Original Colonies, and its 50 stars stand for the 50 states of the Union. The colors of the flag were most likely borrowed from the British flag, which flew over the colonies before the American Revolution.
